Admire Values, not People

1 min read

I'm not a fan of hypothetical questions.

Like: 'If you could have any superpower, what would it be?'

I just don't get it.

There are better ways to stimulate imagination.

I'm also not a fan of this question:

Who do you admire?

Also appears in the form of:

Who do you admire most? Who do you admire most and why?

Here's my problem.

What is a person, after all?

A person is not a fixed object with permanent characteristics or attributes.

I can admire a mahogany staircase, or, for a more realistic example, a limited edition Magimix 5200 XL with attachments for pretty much every food preparation process imaginable.

I digress.

Person: the actual self or individual personality of a human being

And what then, is a personality?

Personality:

the visible aspect of one's character as it impresses others

a person as an embodiment of a collection of qualities

the sum total of the physical, mental, emotional, and social characteristics of an individual.

the organized pattern of behavioral characteristics of the individual.

In addition to this conundrum:

  1. Many people fight huge internal battles that they never share.
  2. People keep secrets.
  3. It's hard to determine the true motives of others.

Don't put people on pedestals.

Don't be blind to people who consistently uphold noble values right in front of your eyes.

Admire character.

Admire values.

Not people.
